An escape from hot summer weather and the opportunity for some excellent 4-wheeling was incentive enough for 125 vehicles and 250-300 participants to gather together near Salida, Colorado for the SWFWDA ‘98 Summer Meeting and trail rides. With 3 full days and at least 10 trails to choose from, there was plenty of opportunity for 4-wheeling from extreme to easy. The center of activity was at the same site north of Salida used by the Mile-Hi Jeep Club for ALL-4-FUN Week in August ‘96 (http://www.4x4now.com/a4f.htm). Occasional afternoon Thunderstorms dampened some of the runs, but were not a real problem during the event.

It remained dry Saturday morning during the meeting. Election of certain officer positions took place. Those new and re-elected as officers should insure that the quality leadership of the organization will continue. An update on the current situation in the Robledo’s near Las Cruces was presented. Information obtained by the Freedom of Information Act confirms a little "green activism" within the local BLM office. They continue to be uncooperative in providing promised signage for the new trails, as well. 3 new clubs were accepted as members. The SWFWDA continues its steady growth, now with 33 clubs and 1154 members.

The weather was also pleasant during the Saturday evening feast. The Teriyaki beef kabobs, corn-on-the-cob, ‘taters and all the fixin’s was excellent! There even was opportunity for a second helping! Catered by the First Street Cafe’ of Salida, service and food was outstanding. I heard no complaints.

Popular moderate trails at the event were Grizzly Lake, Mt. Antero and Tomich / Hancock Pass. Hard trails Chinaman’s Gulch and Iron Chest were run each day and Wheeler Lake on Saturday. Extreme Mine Sweeper was run each day. Among other trails driven by participants were easy, but scenic Tincup Pass and Hayden Pass / Hermit Pass.

The extreme Rattler trail remains closed. But, the Salida area 4WD club continues to investigate other potential "World-Class" trails in the area. They are working with and following BLM procedures. Hopefully, more developments later.
