driving and interpretive history are equal partners in this moderate journey.
WHAT: When the weather turned hot, the Indians of Owens Valley relocated to the high country. We’ll do the same. This guided, interpretive tour is named for Monache Meadows, the largest meadows in the Sierra. The meadows, in turn, are named for the Monache Indians who lived in Inyo and Mono counties more than a century ago.
We’ll spend the better part of three days and two nights above 7,000-foot elevation mark exploring and driving through the high country. The Sherman Pass 4X4 trail, which climbs above 9,000 feet, awaits us. See if you can spot corn lilies, which look remarkably like fugitives from science fiction film "Day of the Triffids."
This excursion is suitable for the entire family. Some prior 4WD driving experience is helpful, but not required. The scenery is spectacular, but the camping will be primitive. Like travelers of yesteryear, we’ll gather around a campfire for a genuine camp-style potluck dinners and good cheer.
