Trip From Hell" by Allen Sayles
- "The explosive force of compressed gasses (air) is incomprehensible
to most of us... I recently learned of a "spare/tank" within a 4X
that exploded. The internally-stored, overinflated spare not only broke out
all of the windows, but bent out the top of all four doors and deformed the
roof of the Grand Cherokee!" SPARE
TIRE/TANK CAUTION! by Harry

- Scenic stuff, this Sierra forest. Always a pleasure to watch the biotic
changes, going from the dessert scrub to the pinyon and juniper, then yellow
pine and cedar....We make our merry way along, Roger tending to our
education with his CB-delivered tidbits. We come upon the meadow in due
time. How big is this thing anyway? Biggest in the Sierra, Roger tells
us....Eventually we end up at the steepest section, a couple hundred yards
long, and even Roger in his Blazer has to take more than one shot at some of
the worst parts. Monache

- "Bob tried a little different line than we did. This proved to be
disastrous. As I watched in my mirror, I saw Bob roll the Green Hornet onto
it's top. We had a rollover. Bob got on the CB right away to say he was
fine." Truckhaven Trek '97

- Death Valley '97
by Barbara Hare. "On our way again, we started the climb up the
Lippencott Mine Road. What an experience! Harry led us forward and upward
over the rocky, pitted, washed-out road. Slowly, we guided our vehicles over
the rocks and through the ruts, hugging the mountainside."
- Watcha Need to Getchaback,
"Nobody sells one, but almost everybody carries one. The resourceful
are challenged and the inexperienced frustrated with it. It can consume you
or save you, and take on unwieldy proportions. Magic fairy dust would be the
sole content if Tinkerbell carried one, but sand and dirt usually cover
mine. It's where you put all the goodies you hope you'll never have to use.
Fourwheeler magazine's Granville King used to call it a "getchaback"
box. Here's what I carry in mine,..." by Harry Lewellyn
- Going Great Ghosts (California
Ghost Towns), During its heyday in the early 1880s, Bodie was
one of the most populous towns in California. It was also regarded as one of
the most lawless. A young girl, learning that her family was moving to Bodie,
wrote in her diary, "Good-bye, God, we're going to Bodie." by
Roger Vargo.
- TRIP PLANNING RESOURCES
(for California Exploring), "The other day I was
thinking about a comment a fellow off-roader made to Harry on one of his
trips. The comment essentially had to do with how to find different places
to explore. At the time, I was in the process of trying to find a place to
go to the upcoming weekend. Then I thought about the resources that I have
accumulated the past two years, the friends who have used my resources and
that maybe others might be interested in what I use to help find new places
to explore. I am no expert on the subject of four-wheel driving, but I have
collected a lot of material on where to go, of which I never get
enough!" by Brad Hinkson
- COPPER CANYON [Mexico] '97
"A short distance away was a wonderland of geology with the Valley of
Frogs, Valley of Chichis (breasts) and Valley of Mushrooms, all areas of
rocks fitting the names- even elephants! Our group photo supporting the
balancing rock shows our great teamwork and strength! Tarahumara women were
making and selling baskets, cedar figures and beads."
- BURY MY FORD IN CEROCAHUI
This story chronicles the rescue of my Explorer from mid-Copper Canyon,
Mexico … and more. It’s contains renditions of The Coyote’s World. My
philosophy is blatantly rubbed in your face, but I trust you know I care. It’s
also a version of the FOURWHEELING ACADEMY. However, the driving insights
and navigation techniques are more subtly presented. I also learned a lot
from the experience. I want to share that with you too.
