One glance at Don Carter and you'll understand why he is known as Big Red. His 6'8" frame and red hair are more than a subtle clue. The 38-year-old San Clemente resident plays construction superintendent in real life. He is also a self proclaimed "fledgling computer geek."
Big Red cut his youthful backroad teeth on hunting and fishing with his dad and brother in Washington State. In 1984, a friend invited him on the annual Tierra Del Sol Desert Safari. He was so amazed at what 4WDs could do, he went out and bought a Toyota 4X4 two weeks later. The hook was set and he started to build his little red Toy. Driving skills developed, along with truck building, as he learned about tires, gears, suspension, air-lockers, two winches and an ultra-low, dual transfer cases system. Don has transformed the fuel-injected 114" wheelbase Toy into a very capable rock crawler. Currently Don leads the Silver Coyote's Black Diamond treks. he also enjoys the full spectrum of four wheeling, from tagging along on "collage" trips to looking for tough new challenges for his 4Xing friends.
Underneath his tough Toy and skin are what the Coyote needs - responsibility to the environment and respect for others' capabilities and equipment.
