Let us count the ways. First of all, it is available from our friends at Maps Unlimited
for about $250. Secondly, the response time is far better than any Magellan product we
have tested in the past. Even without initializing the unit, it found its location in less
than ten minutes straight out of the box. Once it knew where it was, it kept its position
consistently during our Utah and New Mexico trips, plotting and positioning all the way.
The feature I like the most
is the plotter shown on the left. Once you key in a waypoint, it plots a course for you,
then plots your progress along that course showing exactly where you are in relationship
to your waypoint. You can enter in an entire series of waypoints for your route and it
will plot your course along that series.
The backtrack feature has come in useful several times. When you get to a dead- end, select backtrack and the 4000 will plot a course along 21 Last Fixes. It automatically stores one in the Last Fix Buffer every ten minutes as you travel.
That Last Fix Buffer also came in handy the when someone asked me to show them on the map where we had lunch. I pulled up the last fixes and used one stored during our lunch break to plot the position on the map using a ruler.
The 4000 also keeps track of UTM and Lat/Lon at the same time. Switching back and forth between screens only requires the press of one button.
Of course it also does most other functions common in GPS units. You can enter in any two positions anywhere on earth and it will tell you how far apart they are. It can provide you the time of day for sunrise and sunset for any day during our lifetimes and it will also tell you how much of the moon is visible for any given day, but it will not tell you what times of that day the moon will be visible. Data can not be downloaded to the 4000 but it has an NMEA output that is compatible with the new DeLorme GPS kit that enables it to draw your route over DeLorme maps in a Laptop computer. More on that subject in another issue.
