Moab was first settled in 1855 by Mormons who quickly abandoned their remote outpost because they were frightened of the area's Native American population It was resettled in 1876. Since that time, the city and its people have carved an existence as changing as the eroded desert around it. Moab has served as a river-irrigated fruit growing center, a dock for ill-fated steam powered paddle boats on the Colorado River, and in the 1950's, a Uranium boom town, Today, the primary industry is tourism. The town, beautifully set near the banks of the Colorado River, is the jumping off point for recreational adventures of every kind. Moab offers all types of lodging and accommodations. More and more retirees are discovering the advantages of the Moab/Green River area as well, making the region a growing retirement spot.
The city of Green River, is located at a centuries old crossing of the Green River and is divided by the river and 1-70. It was settled in the late 1870's as a mail relay station. Today, Green River's 'feel' is dominated by tourism and melon growing. All services are available.
Castle Valley is the historic name of what is now a small, but growing, residential community. The valley is about eighteen miles northeast of Moab. In the mid to late 1800's the area was populated by miners and sheepherders. It became a supply center for the whole region. Today the valley is quietly growing again with several small ranches and homesites.
Crescent Junction is eighteen miles east of Green River at the junction of US 191,1-70, and US 6/50. Named for the crescent shaped Book Cliffs which dominate the view, this was once nothing more than a service station at a wide spot in the road. Today, however, there are several full-time residents.
Thompson Springs is east of Crescent Junction near 1-70. It once was a primary shipping point for cattle raised in the area. Today, it is an Amtrak 'flag stop', one of the few left in the country.
