The New Mexico 4-Wheelers Blanca Defense Challenge

Here is a copy of the letter that our club sent COHVCO. We are publicly challenging the rest of the clubs in the SWFWDA to match or beat our contribution. A plea for individual contributions will appear in the Association newsletter that goes out June 15th in addition to the strong argument that I made to our club membership for contributions Saturday night.

Letter to the Colorado Off Highway Vehicle Coalition

Fellow enthusiasts:

Enclosed is a check for $200.00 from the New Mexico 4 Wheelers for the COHVCO Legal Defense Fund. Our club has been very actively involved in the fight to keep the road up Mt. Blanca open all the way to the top. We strongly encourage the COHVCO to sue the Forest Service over the current road closure on Mt. Blanca that terminates vehicle access at Lake Como. It is very obvious that the Forest Service had its own agenda and showed blatant disregard for both the public input process and wise multiple use management in its decision.

We will be publishing the COHVCO address in our club newsletter with a strong endorsement and plea for additional donations from the individual club members. We are also challenging the other 25 clubs in the Southwest Four Wheel Drive Association to match or beat our club's contribution to this fund.

Why is a club in New Mexico so interested in a Colorado trail? Mt. Blanca is not only one of the premier challenge 4WD routes in the country but we believe it is very important from a precedent standpoint. If the Forest Service is allowed to arbitrarily close this road in defiance of overwhelming user input to the contrary, they will be encouraged to close other trails all over the area. This must not be allowed to happen. Make Mt. Blanca our line in the sand!

Sincerely,

Mark R. Werkmeister
