I had been thinking about a new Jeep to replace my "battle hardened" '88 Bronco II for a long time.  I had heard good things about the new Jeep "TJ" model ever since it came out in the'97 model year. At the same time, I was increasingly convinced that I wanted to switch to an automatic transmission despite the dedicated "gear jammer" I had been ever since I started serious 4-wheeling.  Last summer I rented a stock Jeep TJ with an automatic just to make sure it was what I wanted.   I took it out on the heavily eroded, rugged east side of Taylor Pass south of Aspen, Colorado.  I pointed it at every obstacle that I could get the bumper over.   It effortlessly climbed everything it could get a tire on.  I was hooked both on both the TJ and the automatic transmission.  If a stock TJ with puny tires can do that well, what can a built-up TJ do?  We're going to find out.  Follow along as we build up our stock '98 TJ for serious rock crawling.  And then test it on some of the toughest trails in the country.
